Canada Germany Hydrogen Alliance established
Germany and Canada want to cooperate more closely on hydrogen production in the future: An agreement to this effect was signed in Stephenville, Canada, on August 23, 2022, by Robert Habeck, the German Federal Minister of Economics and Climate Protection, and Jonathan Wilkinson, the Canadian Minister of Energy.
Closer cooperation on the energy carrier of the future was a key concern of the visit to Canada by Habeck and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz; the agreement is intended to accelerate the international market ramp-up of the urgently needed green hydrogen. The goal is to establish a transatlantic supply chain, Habeck said in Newfoundland: first deliveries from Canada to Germany should start as early as 2025.
To the declaration of intent (BMWK in German)
Through our German Secretariat of the Energy Partnership with Canada and together with the Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance, adelphi, and a local hydrogen production project we organized the German Canadian Atlantic Renewable Hydrogen Expo on August 23 in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Expo was part of the official visit by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice-Chancellor/Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck, and brought together hydrogen production projects in Atlantic Canada with hydrogen offtake companies and hydrogen technology providers (including our member companies Siemens Energy, Siemens Gamesa, and BASF).
The Expo concluded with the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent by Minister Habeck and The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and the formation of the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance. The Declaration was also endorsed by the Premiers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
In addition, several business-to-business partnerships have been formalized through memoranda of understanding, for example by ABO Wind, E.ON, and Uniper with hydrogen stakeholders in Atlantic Canada (for more information follow the links below).
We look forward to continuing our work in support of the hydrogen market ramp-up in Canada and Germany in close cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Natural Resources Canada, and the German and Canadian foreign missions, and hope to facilitate first hydrogen derivate shipments to Germany set to begin as early as 2025.
